We are pleased to do custom work under the following
circumstances:
- Contact us by phone (937) 228-1662 to briefly describe the project
you have in mind. Provide us with information as to the quantity of
items you are seeking, and the expected cost, or cost range you have
allotted so that we may design a chest or case within your budget.
- If possible, fax a rough sketch to us at (937) 228-8557 which shows
over-all size and spells out what features you are looking for such
as: locking or non-locking, hinged top, glass vs. plastic panels,
species of wood, interior dimensions (if critical), type of finish,
etc.
- Based upon the level of design work to be done, the cost for us to
prepare or finalize a design and provide estimated cost information
usually runs between $100.00 and $250.00. This amount is due before
any design work by Gerstner is submitted.
|
 |
- Upon your approval of the design (unless the order calls for only
one piece to be made), we will suggest that two production samples be
built – one for your examination and approval, and one for us to
keep as a production master. While we can provide an estimated sample
cost, The actual cost of these samples is based on time and materials.
Our sample labor rate is $60.00 per hour.
- Once you review the production sample, we will go over any final
changes (or approval as is) before beginning an actual production run.
While this entire process is somewhat involved, by following these
standard procedures, H. Gerstner & Sons will provide you with a
top quality product.

Many
people have asked about the hardness of the various species of woods shown
below.
Here is some interesting facts regarding the woods
we primarily use.
Janka
Hardness is a test which measures the pounds of force it takes to drive a
.44" diameter steel ball 1/2 its depth into wood. These numbers are
taken from various publications but principally are from the U.S. Forest
Products lab. The higher the number the harder the species.
